Aside from the lozenge permanently attached to the roof, of course.

Classic BMW parking job though.

Kidding, I’ve got an M3. Those e39 wagons are cool, wish we’d gotten the 540iT with a manual though.

Are cargo boxes and roof racks still in vouge? I knew they were for a while (for whatever reason)

Around here (Seattle) you see lots of Subaru Outbacks with permanently attached cargo boxes, but we’re not exactly the cutting edge when it comes to car trends. With a wagon like that, or the BMW, how often do you really need even more cargo space?

With our sportwagen...more often than you would think. Kids mean lots of stuff. Also, many people leave these on full time in the winter for a lockable non-stanky ski locker.

I take my Thule rack off from about November to March, as I’m not doing much riding or hauling and I want to spare it the salt. It’s not a big drag on fuel economy, and I don’t really care about the ugly. It’s a commuter and cargo appliance:

Think of it this way, as it’s the only way I can wrap my brain around it. You take a utilitarian vehicle like a wagon, make it sporty by modifying it, lowering it, wheels, what have you. Add more utilitarian aspects to it like the roof racks and boxes and baskets. Now the whole car is one big juxtaposition, in that it has aspects of performance cars (being low, modified etc) and also aspects of utilitarianism which is usually the opposite. It’s the melding of these two opposites in one car that makes it interesting.

or...stick with me here...its just cause people think it looks neat. Though I do think your more logical and thought out explination probably comes closest to the actual mark.

I’m pretty sure I recognize this parking garage, but have never seen that car in it...very nice!

Anyone who puts a roof rack on their car because they like how it looks is sorely mistaken. That’s like having straight teeth but going to the orthodontist for headgear anyway, because you think it looks cool.

I love my cargo box. I don’t have any problem with seeing em on lowered wagons. They’re damn useful.

I’d leave my Thule on the GSW all the time if it didn’t create so much wind noise.

(not mine of course, but awesome)

Hey, roof racks are cool alright?! Now please excuse me while I dream about hanging a roof box off the top of my MX-6..
